Groot Begijnhof (Leuven, Belgium)

The Grand Béguinage of Leuven is situated along the river Dijle in an area called “Ten Hove”. It was founded at the beginning of the 13th century outside the town wall. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was built in 1305. The beguinage appears like a small town and consists of about 100 houses mostly erected during the most flourishing period when the number of beguines had reached 360, between 1630 and 1670. After the French Revolution, the beguinage of Leuven was confiscated: the beguines continued to live in their houses but free rooms were rented to elderly and poor people. The entire complex was restored between the 1960’s and 1980’s. The last Beguine died in 1988. The University of Leuven bought the beguinage in 1962 and today it is used as a campus for students and academic guests. The former infirmary is used as faculty club. This beguinage was listed together with other 12 Flemish beguinages as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1998. Open: every day. Church: 1st April - 30th September from Tuesday to Sunday from 1.30 p.m. - 4.30 p.m.
