Great North Museum (Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom)
The Great North Museum holds all of the collections that were formerly held in the Hancock Museum and the Shefton Museum, both of which closed in 2008. This new museum opened on 23rd May 2009 at a cost of £26 million. The Great North Museum includes two distinct sites; the Hancock building and the Hatton Art Gallery. The Hancock building was the site of the former Hancock Museum, a natural history museum. Amongst the exhibits held at the Hancock building are a full size skeleton of a T-Rex dinosaur and an interactive model of Hadrian’s Wall. There are also objects from Ancient Greece and Egyptian mummies. The Hatton Gallery is an art gallery that contains over 3,000 paintings and sculptures dating back to the 14th century. This was formerly part of Newcastle University’s museum and these are currently still displayed there with no plans to relocate them to the Hancock building. This gallery is now part of the Great North Museum but can be found in the University’s Fine Art building. The Great North Museum is open daily from 10am until 5pm (Monday to Saturday) and 2pm until 5pm (Sunday). Admission is free.
