Great Dixter (Northiam, United Kingdom)

Great Dixter is a property on the edge of the village of Northiam. Both the house and gardens are open to visitors. The last owner, the late Christopher Lloyd, became renowned as a plantsman and established Great Dixter as an innovative garden of national repute. His father, Nathaniel Lloyd, acquired the property in 1910 and was responsible for its restoration. It is now run by a charitable trust. The original house dates from the 15th century, and Lloyd had Sir Edwin Lutyens clear the additions of later centuries to reveal the fine timbered medieval Great Hall, one of the largest surviving in the UK. A nearby Hall House scheduled for demolition was also moved here to provide a further wing, and antiques from the 16th and 17th centuries complete the décor. The garden is designed to complement the house and to reflect the seasons. There is a variety of layouts and plant types, including a sunken garden, walled garden, exotic garden, orchard and a particularly renowned herbaceous border called the Long Border.
