Goldsmiths Hall (London, United Kingdom)
The term “hallmark” is derived from the fifteenth century requirement for craftsmen in precious metals to take their wares to be “marked” at the Goldsmith’s Hall. The Goldsmiths Company gained its charter in 1327 from Edward III. The present Goldsmiths Hall, situated just north of St Paul’s Cathedral, was opened in 1835 and is the home of the London Assay Office. Its ceilings and walls are ornately decorated. The grand staircase has marble pillars and items of gold and silver are on display. The Hall is open to the public for exhibitions (including the annual Goldsmith’s Fair) and for other special occasions. There are also a number of public open days which consist of a guided tour lasting for one hour throughout the year.
