In 1900, Catalan industrialist Count Eusebi Guell invested in a plot of land where he planned to build a landscaped housing estate in the style of the English garden towns that were popular at that time. He commissioned the architect Antoni Gaudi to work on the project which turned out to be a complete commercial failure. Only two houses were ever built and Gaudi was forced to buy one of them with some of his earnings. Today that house is a museum inside the park. For most visitors the main attraction is Gaudi’s surreal, sinuous and nature-inspired mosaic work with dragons and lizards, twisted pillars representing forests and many examples of the bizarre and beautiful vision of the artist. The nearest metro stop is Lessops, approximately 20 minutes walk away with a steep climb from the station to the park. Buses stop nearby including the main public tour buses. Admission to the park is free although the museum carries a charge. The park hours vary according to the time of year with closure at 6 pm in the winter and 9 pm in the high summer.
