The square is named after fountains that were built in 1568 but were destroyed to make way for newer buildings in the nineteenth century. The square is also part of the Palazzi dei Rolli which is a UNESCOs World Heritage site. Once used for equestrian tournaments, the piazza has several interesting buildings around it including the Palazzo Spinola, Palazzo Negrone and the Palazzo Pallavicino.
