Edinburgh Festival Fringe (Edinburgh, United Kingdom)

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is, despite its name, an integral part of the Edinburgh Festival which takes place every August. It started in 1947 when some performers arrived uninvited at the main Festival and put on impromptu shows. By the mid 1950s it was an organised event with ticket sales, although it also attracted opposition from the traditionalists which lasted until the 1970s. Now it bills itself as the “biggest arts festival in the world” and in 2009 presented more than 2000 shows. Anyone can bring a show to the Fringe. The organising body does not commission work or pay fees, but acts as an enabler providing information and support to participants and selling tickets. Given its origins as an alternative to mainstream arts productions the shows tend to be more experimental and based on theatre or comedy, although dance and music also figure. Many productions which premièred at the Fringe went on to become major hits and several comedy careers were launched in one-man Fringe shows. Every possible venue is utilised, from the city’s theatres to church halls. As well as the ticketed events, there are on-going street performances to add to the festival atmosphere.
