Ecclesall Woods cover an area of around 350 acres and are one of the last remaining remnants of ancient woodland in Northern England. This unique habitat contains an abundance of wildlife but it is also well known for its historic and archaeological features. Within the woods there are several charcoal heaths known as Q-Pits, there is also a gravestone known as the charcoal burner’s grave and an unusual prehistoric stone that contains cup and ring markings, dating from the late Neolithic or Bronze Age period this was discovered in 1981 and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. These woods are designated as a Local Nature Reserve for wildlife and contain over 15km of public footpaths.
