Długa (Gdańsk, Poland)

Dluga (the Long Street) is Gdansk’s main pedestrian broadwalk, crossing the Main Town and, together with the Long Market (Dlugi Targ) forming a so-called Royal Way, from the Upland Gate to the Green Gate and the Motlawa quays. The whole route is commonly referred to as “Dluga”. Dluga proper begins at the Golden Gate, the most ornate of the Gdansk gates, and is lined along its whole stretch with the typical Gdansk merchant houses, Dutch-influenced narrow and tall town houses topped with decorative gables and adorned with coats of arms, allegorical sculptures, bas-reliefs and frescoes. The best merchant houses on Dluga include Ferber house, Schuman house, Uphagen house (now a museum) and Lion’s Castle (Lwi Zamek). Dluga widens into the Dlugi Targ (Long Market), the heart of Gdansk and the location of its most important secular buildings. The Main Town Hall, the Artus Court and the landmark Neptune fountain are all on the Long Market.
