Cork City Gaol (Cork, Ireland)
Cork City Gaol is an imposing castle like building that once housed prisoners during the 19th century. Stepping inside visitors are taken back in time to the 19th century. Wandering through the wings of the gaol visited are transported back in time via sounds and smells that include the shuffling feet of inmates, each representing their particular period in Irish history from pre –famine times to the foundation of the state. The cells are furnished with life like wax figures and there is original graffiti on some of the cell walls. An audio visual tells of the social history of the Gaol and its contrasting lifestyles of 19th century Cork and why some people turned to crime, and some even emigrated to Australia. In the former Governors house, at the same location, is the Radio Museum Experience. It includes the restored 6CK Radio Broadcasting Studio and a wonderful collection of artefacts, among which the RTE Collection, providing a nostalgic trip back to the early days of Radio. In addition you can find an audio visual on Marconi and particularly his Irish connections.
