Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve (Lanark, United Kingdom)

The Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve is an amalgamation of six woodlands, five of which are Sites of Special Scientific Interest, in the South Lanarkshire towns of Lanark, Carluke, Lesmahagow and Hamilton. Cleghorn Glen and Cartland Craigs (known locally as Cartland Crags) are in Lanark, with the Falls of Clyde nearby in the village of New Lanark. Mauldslie Woods is just outside Carluke, Nethan Gorge is between Lesmahagow and the village of Crossford and Chatelherault is in Hamilton. These woodlands are being preserved because of the abundance of native woodland found within them, as well as the many endangered or threatened species they contain, such as peregrine falcons, badgers, roe deer and red squirrels. All six sites are always fully open to the public and are free to visit, with the Falls of Clyde and Chatelherault both also providing visitor centres. Car parking is available near Cartland Craigs, Falls of Clyde and Chatelherault, and there is a train station at Chatelherault which provides half hourly services to Glasgow and Larkhall (hourly on Sundays), and all are within ten minute walks of bus routes.
