Citadelle Vauban (Besançon, France)

The original defensive complex was built by the Spanish to a Vauban design, but when the French captured the town in 1674 Vauban himself took charge of upgrading the work. It is a classic Vauban star shape built on an impregnable high position. The river Doubs forms a loop around the town and has carved a steep valley with sheer cliffs. As well as the walls there was a dual dry moat network, now part of the modern traffic system. Other fortifications such as Fort Griffon and Fort Chaudanne were built around the town at the same time, and all Vauban’™s fortifications are designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Inside the citadel is the Espace Vauban which comprises a group of museums including one dedicated to the history of the fortifications and another to local history.
