Accommodations in Blaye near Citadelle de Vauban (Blaye, France)
Citadelle de Vauban (Blaye, France)
The citadel is located in the centre of Blaye on the right bank of the Gironde estuary. The history of the settlement goes back to Roman times, but its strategic location became important in the 17th century with the need to protect Bordeaux. Vauban constructed three defensive positions across the estuary: this citadel, Fort Médoc on the opposite bank and Fort Paté on an island in the middle. Together they formed a ‘bolt’ which locked out attackers. The citadel is on a rocky outcrop in a natural prominent defensive position. Vauban enlarged it to create 17 hectares of barracks, stores and powder magazines. Inside the fortifications are the remains of the St Romain basilica dating from the 4th century where Roland was buried when he was brought back from Roncevaux. Today the area also houses the archaeological and historical museum of Blaye and an exhibition about the Gironde estuary. Opening hours and guided tour details are on the website.
