Chinatown (London, United Kingdom)

The current Chinatown is located in the Soho area central London and belongs to the Borough of City of Westminster. Gerrard Street runs across the Chinatown. There are a number of Chinese restaurants, Asian supermarkets, souvenir shops and Asian bakeries. In the beginning of 20th century, the first Chinatown was situated at the East End of London in an area called Limehouse. The Chinese population was concentrated in that area to cater for the Chinese sailors arriving at the Docklands. The modern Chinatown today occupies Gerrard Street, Lisle Street, Wardour Street and Shaftesbury Avenue. The section of the Shaftesbury Avenue was only established in the 1970s. Chinatown is a commercial area with very few residents. The street signs of the Gerrard Street are bilingual and displayed in both English and Chinese.
