Chelmsford Cathedral (Chelmsford, United Kingdom)
Chelmsford Cathedral is the cathedral of the Diocese of Chelmsford which covers all of Essex, 5 boroughs of east London, Waltham Forrest and Brentwood. Although the Diocese is the second largest in England its cathedral is one of the smallest. The cathedral is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, St Peter and St Cedd and was known as St Mary’s Church before it became cathedral when the diocese was formed in 1914. It is the seat of the Bishop of Chelmsford whose throne can be found in front of the east wall. Chelmsford Cathedral dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries when it replaced a much older church that had been standing on this site, it’s nave with its colourful ceiling was added in the early 19th century after the original nave collapsed. Events such as lunchtime concerts, carol singing and more are held regularly. Please visit the website for the events calendar. A bookshop is located within the cathedral, guided tours are available for groups via prior arrangement.
