Central Saint Giles (London, United Kingdom)

Central Saint Giles is a building development in the Covent Garden area of London. Completed in 2010, it provides office, retail and restaurant space, as well as residential apartments. Included in the concept is the public piazza which the building surrounds. The architect was Renzo Piano, who sought to bring “heart and soul” to the development with a “high level of transparency and accessibility”. The building is therefore characterised by a 6 metre high transparent ground floor, gardens on every floor and roof terraces on 3 floors to connect with the outside world. There is also a bold use of colour, bands of yellow, orange and green on the exterior walls. In keeping with modern environmental concerns there is a high sustainability rating, including reuse of rain water and a biomass boiler. Overall the complex comprises 400,000 sq ft of office space, 25,000 sq ft of shops and restaurants and 109 apartments.
