Castell de Montjuïc (Barcelona, Spain)

The Castell de Montjuïc is the name of a fortification on the Montjuïc hill in Barcelona that overlooks the harbour. There is some debate over the origins of the name of the hill, which either derives from old Catalan and means the “Hill of the Jews” or from Latin meaning “Hill of Jupiter”. It stands 173 metres high and has been the site of many different fortifications over the centuries. The Castell de Montjuïc was constructed during the 17th century and extended in the 18th century. During much of its lifetime it has been used as a prison and been the site of several high profile executions. Surrounding the fortress there is a moat with lush green vegetation and adjacent to this there is an archery range. Within the Citadel of the Castell de Montjuïc there is a military museum and a row of small cannons surrounding it. The flat roof of the Citadel provides one of the best panoramic views of Barcelona and this is a favourite spot for photographers to shoot the sea, mountains or urban sprawl of the city.
