Cartland Bridge (Lanark, United Kingdom)

Cartland Bridge is a road bridge providing access to the Royal Burgh of Lanark over the Mouse Water. It was built in 1822 by the renowned Scottish architect Thomas Telford. At 39 metres above the river bed, it is Scotland’s highest road bridge. The bridge is located directly adjacent to Cartland Craigs, one of seven sites which make up the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve. Historically there was a toll gate on the bridge, from 1822 until 1883 when tolls were abolished in the town. The Cartland Bridge toll gates were purchased by local firm Laurie and Symington for use as the entrance to the previous Lanark Auction Market, which was demolished in 2004. The gates, however, were retained after being listed as a Category A historic structure in 1993.
