Captain Cook’s Cottage is located right on the seafront and marks the starting point of the Captain Cook Heritage Trail, which was officially opened in 1978 by HRH The Prince of Wales. It also stands on the route of the long distance walk “The Cleveland Way”. This is not actually the house that the explorer James Cook lived in since that was washed away by the sea but is said that many of the possessions from that house were rescued and moved to this other house, which has been owned by the same Staithes family for over four centuries. Captain Cook’s Cottage houses a range of artefacts that relate to James Cook and the time that he spent in the village.
