Prehistoric art dating from the Cro Magnon era about 15,000 years ago. This site is unusual, however, in that the art takes the form of a sculpted frieze on the wall of the abri, rather than paintings or engravings deep inside caves. The bas relief horses, bison and reindeer are large (up to 2 metres in length) and of a very high artistic standard. Evidence of a burial was also found there, and a copy of the remains is displayed where it was discovered. It is thought the frieze may extend further, but it is still to be excavated. The prehistoric sites and painted caves of the Vézère valley are now a UNESCO World Heritage site.Although the abri was open to the elements, funding from UNESCO has enabled a new visitor centre to be built over the abri and thus to protect the sculptures. Visits are guided only. Ramps are available for disabled access.
