Belfry (Gravelines, France)

This belfry is square in shape and architecturally simple. The only decorative element is the slate-covered louvred window. Built in 1608 and located in the centre of the citadel it acted as a watchtower. At 27m high it had a good view of the surrounding area and out to sea, and was higher than the watchtowers of the shipowners. The clock mechanism is now automatic, but was manual right up to 2005 and 104 steps had to be climbed to wind it. The belfry is one of a group in northern France and Belgium which now have UNESCO World Heritage site status. They are of varying designs and dates but all have a civic, rather than ecclesiastical, function.
