Belfry of Tournai (Tournai, Belgium)

It is oldest Belfry in Belgium and was built in 1188 in Gothic style. In 1294 the Tower was raised to 72 metres by adding an additional stage and the four corner turrets were added at the same time, while a carillon with 44 bells was added in 1535. The Belfry was fire-damaged in 1391 and served as a prison until 1827. Restorations were effected in the mid-19th century and at the end of the 20th century. It was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. Opening hours are from 10h00 to 13h00 and 14h00 to 18h30 in Summer (March - October) and from 10h00 to 12h00 and 14h00 to 17h00 during the rest of the year. The Belfry is closed on Mondays, Sunday mornings and certain public holidays.
