Ashmolean Museum (Oxford, United Kingdom)
The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology was the world’s first university museum. It was built to house the personal collection of Elias Ashmole and opened to the public in 1683 - a time when even the word ‘museum’ was still novel. Today it has departments specialising in antiquities, western art, eastern art, coins, plaster casts and conservation. During 2007 - 2009 the museum is undergoing major building works to double the exhibition space, but this means that some of the galleries have been destroyed and their collections put into storage. Thus visitors will experience a temporarily restricted set of exhibits with just 200 of the ‘highlights’ of the antiquities, coins and eastern art on display in the so-called ‘Treasures’ display. The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm from Tuesday to Saturday and from noon to 5 pm on Sundays. Facilities include a cafe and a shop and entrance is free.
