Accommodations in Torpoint near Antony (Torpoint, United Kingdom)
Antony (Torpoint, United Kingdom)
Antony House at Torpoint was built in the early 18th century for Sir William Carew, although the family owned the estate for some 200 years before that. It is still occupied by the Carew Pole family but was donated to the National Trust in 1961. The house and grounds occupy a fine site on a promontory between the Tamar and Lynher estuaries. The house remains largely unaltered since its original construction and contains an acclaimed collection of paintings, furniture and porcelain. The grounds, covering 25 acres, were landscaped by Humphry Repton. Some planting is in a formal layout, such as the Knot Garden and the topiary, and it is home to the national collection of daylilies. A further 50 acres is woodland, noted for its rhododendrons and azaleas. The picturesque setting has made it popular for films, most recently Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. The property has a café, shop and car park, and is accessible to wheelchair users. For opening times see the website.
