Abbey Road Studios (London, United Kingdom)

Abbey Road Studios has been a recording studio since 1931, located in an 1813 building. Its first remit was classical music, but under the producer George Martin of EMI, first comedy records with artists like Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, and later pop and rock albums, with the Beatles in particular, were produced here. In fact, the Name “Abbey Road” was only adopted as the name of the studio after the Beatles brought out an album of that name. Before then, it was simply the address of the studio. This album famously showed the pedestrian crossing outside the studio, with the four band members crossing the eponymous road. It was the Beatles who brought Abbey Road studios into the publics consciousness, as they recorded most of their albums there, pioneering new recording techniques with the help of George Martin. Artists having recorded at Abbey Road studios include Madness, Cilla Black, Pink Floyd, U2 to name a few. Abbey Road is a working studio and not open to the general public, but fans and visitors of London can see the pedestrian crossing featured on the Beatles’ and other artists albums and a wall nearby is available for fans leave to graffiti messages.
