Μedieval city of Rhodes (Rhodes Town, Greece)

The Medieval city of Rhodes is a monumental architectural complex. It was built on the same place that from 408 B.C was the Ancient city of Rhodes, on a Byzantine smaller castle by the Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem who occupied the island from 1309 to 1523. They have transformed the city into a stronghold against the Musulman threads. The medieval city is divided in two parts. The Upper Town with the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Hospital and the Street of the Knights and the Lower Town where Gothic architecture coexists with Islamic mosques, public baths and other buildings dating from the Ottoman period. From 1988 the Medieval City of Rhodes has been included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
