Colorado became a state in 1876 and construction of a state Capitol building started ten years later, following the gift of 10 acres of land from a local landowner. The Colorado Capitol was designed by E.E. Myers and took 22 years to complete at a cost of $3 million. The building takes the form of a Greek cross and is similar in appearance to the national Capitol in Washington, D.C. It used local building materials wherever possible including granite from Gunnison, sandstone from Fort Colins and marble from the town of Marble. Most famously they also used the entire source of rose onyx from the town of Beulah, such that this stone no longer can be found in any other buildings. The building is home to the state Legislature, the Senate and the House of Representatives and houses the offices of many senior political dignatories as well as the state treasury. Free tours are available hourly throughout the year and the Capitol is open Monday to Friday.
