Centrally situated between Shimbashi railway Station and City Hall, Mitsui Garden Shiodome Italia Gai is a modern business-oriented hotel with a bit of an Italian theme. The surprisingly spacious rooms have a “business standard” feel to them, but are nonetheless quite comfortable. Each features air purifier, minibar, flat screen TV with satellite channels, hairdryer, in-room safe, tea/coffee station, work desk and telephone. The on-site Vasco Gardens public bath is available to guests free of charge. Motorists will also find public parking on-site, and all will be impressed with the array of vending machines on each floor. Café La Maria is the main dining venue and specialises in a wide range of Italian favourites. The Shimbashi neighbourhood is quite central, and has much of interest in its own right, such as City Hall and a variety of temples and shrines. The Imperial Palace is approximately three miles to the north.
The hotel is on a street well known, throughout Tokyo, for its Italian restaurants and cafes. Guests really seemed to enjoy the atmosphere of the street, and said that the restaurants they tried there typically had really good food.
While not exactly massive, guests were nonetheless very impressed with the size of the standard rooms. Tokyo, of course, has a reputation for absolutely tiny hotel rooms, so they were happy to have the luxury of a bit of space.
Several guests mentioned that the monorail to Haneda Airport could be caught from a station well within walking distance. They found this enormously convenient since it avoided having to take complicated subways or expensive cabs the last little bit when arriving.
While it's certainly not reasonable to expect perfect English skills, quite a number of guests mentioned that most of the staff's English was far too poor to enable even basic communication.
A couple of guests mentioned that the public baths at the hotel were too small, resulting in some uncomfortable overcrowding. They also felt that they were a bit sterile, with no atmosphere or outlook.
A few guests mentioned that the buffet breakfast did not have many Western options. Since Japanese breakfast traditions are quite different, there was very little they actually felt like eating at the buffet. It may be best to opt for breakfast at one of the many nearby cafes.
