The Plough Inn is a traditional, 16th century, Derbyshire country inn; set in nine acres of countryside. The inn is popular with walkers in search of substantial and appetising food with which to re-charge the batteries. They've certainly come to the right place. The food is great; so is the service ... and if you can grab a table near the bar, the log fire can only enhance the entire experience. Breakfast, too, is excellent.
Spacious and clean, rooms fit the bill perfectly. The place is pet friendly, which is good with so many family dogs eager for those long and bracing walks. One dog-owning tip is to try to get one of the ground floor garden rooms.
The countryside is incredible and the journey is easy from cities such as Manchester and Sheffield. The glorious Chatsworth House is nearby, as is the village of Castleton. During the 19th century, they discovered the world's only source of Blue John, here. Now it can be seen at the Treak Cliff and Blue John caverns.
You can walk it during the day, but not at night when it's pitch black outside. You'll need to take the car if you want to sample the pubs and restaurants. The latter includes: Maazi (Indian) and Penny Pot.
The bar itself is strangely lacking in atmosphere. If eating in, resist being pushed to the far end of the room and away from the fires. It's very stark there.
As the mainly young staff members are taken through their paces, it's the paying ‘punter' who suffers. Everyone is very nice and the young employees are polite and knowledgeable. It's just a pity that their training is at your expense.
