It was undoubtedly the restaurant which came in for the most praise at the Flame Tree. The food is described as authentically Portuguese, and noticeably prepared with top quality ingredients. The outlook, with views over the Bay of Funchal, is also described as lovely.
From the reception, to the waiters, to the cleaning staff, the overwhelming majority of guests have nothing but good things to say about them. They are described as friendly and welcoming, but still very professional in the way they conduct their duties.
Whatever small problems they may have had, the guests who mentioned value overwhelmingly agreed that they received excellent value for money. They came to this conclusion mainly based on the hotels position and the excellent meals at the restaurant.
Surprisingly, not a very common complaint, but some guests do point out that there was no TV in their room. While they did have other activities and diversions, and would not have watched much TV had there been one there, they still thought it would have been useful for the odd times when they wanted to relax and zone out.
While the odd complaint about the bed is not unusual in hotel reviews, there are perhaps a bit too many complaints about the mattresses in this case to ignore. The main complaint seems to be that they are too soft, thus given to sagging and disturbing your sleeping partner.
While it is not far to get to the seaside, and cafes, restaurants and shops, the hotels position high up on the hill mean that it is a very demanding walk, Guests need to be prepared for quite a bit of exertion.
