About Hotel Spa Porto Cristo
The house at 5 Tees January Marg is where Mahatma Gandhi spent the last three and a half months of his life and where, on 30th January 1948, he was murdered as he walked into the garden for the public meeting that he held every evening. The room where he was living has been preserved as it was and contains his meager possessions including his staff, utensils and spectacles. Within the house are several exhibitions of photographs from throughout his life, as well as paintings, memorabilia and statues. Outside, in the garden, a "Martyr's Column" has been constructed on the spot where he was murdered and the path of his final journey, from his room to the garden, is marked. Admission is free and there is a gift shop within the grounds.
