Set in the middle of charming Ambleside, many reviewers thought this hotel provided a conveniently central base for getting out and about in the beautiful national park. Guests also appreciated the proximity of amenities in the town center, which were all within easy walking distance.
Many visitors felt they got decent value for money at this straightforward hotel, which was said to offer competitive room rates for Ambleside. Most thought the rooms were warm, comfortable and cleaned to a good standard. Breakfast and other meals were popular with most diners, who felt portions were generous and liked the choice of real ales. However, some reviewers were unimpressed by the catering and thought service was occasionally prone to disorganization and sluggishness.
Some reviews were critical of the rooms for having worn carpets, cobwebs, dust, small bathrooms, dated furniture and toilets that sometimes didn’t flush properly. Certain rooms were sometimes described as cramped, drab or tired-looking. Many visitors felt the rooms and hotel in general would benefit from further updating.
The hotel sometimes had spare spaces in its own small on-site car park, but these were few and far between and provided on a first come first served basis. Most guests found public car parks nearby in Ambleside then had to bring their luggage to the hotel, which was an inconvenience.
Noise from vehicles delivering to nearby shops overnight or from the bar was occasionally audible in the rooms. Others thought the curtains were too thin to block out light.
