Hotel Multatuli (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Multatuli Hotel occupies a monument listed building that dates back to 1744 and is located within a larger UNSECO World Heritage Site which includes the famous Grachtengordel canal district. The hotel itself is named after one of the country’s most famous authors.

The hotel is well-situated to provide easy access to many of the city’s best cultural and historic attractions including the Anne Frank House, the Royal Palace, Dam Square, Nemo Science Centre and the many canals and bridges throughout the ‘canal belt’ area.

The property provides easy access to many day time and night time activities including the Kalverstraat Shopping District and Chinatown, where one can find great souvenirs and bargains. There are plenty of eateries, cafes and bars in the immediate area and night time provides entertainment with live music, theatres and night clubs.

The hotel offers accommodation over multiple floors but also, strangely has accommodation in the basement, below ground. Guests that don’t mind accommodation that is slightly restrictive in terms of good views of the city will be okay with this, however, be sure of your booking before committing to it.

While the hotel does provide a convenient elevator to make accessing rooms easier, the elevator itself is rather noisy, particularly for guest in rooms within close proximity of the elevator. Light sleeper should ask for rooms away from the elevator if possible.

A common complaint regarding this hotel has to do with the inconsistent and unpredictable water temperature fluctuations, particularly in some of the showers. This can be very annoying with water temperatures suddenly and without warning running extremely hot or cold, making the whole experience unenjoyable.
