Situated in Berlin’s trendy Friedrichshain district, Hotel Michelberger is a quirky design hotel offering hip accommodation to free spirited travellers.
Each room has been designed by an artist, who was given free reign to create a unique and special place. As a result the rooms are quirky and original, but of course also have all the modern amenities like private bathrooms.
Hotel Michelberger is operated by a closely knit group of friends, who are always happy to offer advice and concierge style services to their guests.
The on-site restaurant sources organic ingredients and can accommodate special diets such as vegetarian or vegan. There is also a bar-café serving drinks and light meals.
Friedrichshain is one of the liveliest areas of Berlin, and there is a lot of interesting streetlife in the area. For guests heading into the centre, Checkpont Charlie is 2.8 miles from Hotel Michelberger, and the Reichstag is 3.8 miles away.
The food at the hotel's restaurant was overwhelmingly well-received. Guests of all dietary persuasions seemed to have enjoyed what they called delicious and inventive cuisine, but it was the vegetarians and vegans who gave the most praise. They mentioned that they where very well catered for, and not at all treated like an afterthought.
positive:
Exceptionally trendy design
It was the overall look and feel of the hotel that guest's most seemed to appreciate. The hotel is in a converted factory in old East Berlin, and seems to have retained a bit of the “griminess” associated with the Berlin of a few decades ago, without actually being grimy. Guests loved that.
positive:
Excellent cosmopolitan staff
Again and again guests mentioned how upbeat and friendly most of the staff were. They said they were a very international bunch, but were nevertheless passionate about sharing the inside scoop of the city.
Negative Reviews
negative:
Too “hipsterish” for some
The hotel seems to appeal most to guests who appreciate a certain style of life that has been generalised as “hipsterish”. Of course, as with any slightly alterative lifestyle, it is definitely not everybody's cup of (loose leaf) tea. Those who don't care for the lifestyle are unlikely to be happy at Michelberger.
negative:
Rooms could feel a bit awkward
The rooms have been individually designed, and are quite unusual in their layout. Most liked the uniqueness, and welcomed it as a break from the norm, but some did find that, for them, they weren't so much unique, as simply awkward.
negative:
No air conditioning
Of course summers in Berlin can get quite hot. Guests were disappointed to find that there were no air conditioners in their rooms to help keep things, and themselves, cool.
