Kumbhalgarh Fort, a World Heritage Site is a Mewar fortress in the Rajsamand District of Rajasthan. It is one of the hill forts of Rajasthan. It was built during the 15th century by Rana Kumbha and was enlarged through the 19th century. It is now open to public and is even lit up spectacularly every evening. So, here are more details on the Kumbhalgarh Fort. Kumbhalgarh Fort was built on a hilltop 1100 metres above sea level. Its perimeter walls extend up to 36 km, making it the second longest wall in the world, after the Great Wall of China. Within the fort there are over 360 temples, 300 ancient Jain and the rest Hindu. Legends say that in 1443, the Maharana of Kumbhalgarh, Rana Kumbha, repeatedly failed to build the fort wall. When a spiritual preceptor was consulted about the construction problem, he said that a voluntary human sacrifice would solve the problem. He also advised to build a temple where the head would fall. No one volunteered for a long time, until one day, a pilgrim (some versions suggest a soldier, and some, that the spiritual preceptor and the pilgrim were one and the same) volunteered and he was ritually decapitated. The main gate of the fortress, Hanuman Pol contains a shrine and a temple in the honor of the great sacrifice. From the top of the fort, one can see the seemingly endless Aravali range. Even the sand dunes and Thar desert are visible from the walls.
