Situated just a minute or two from Cuba’s famous Varadero Beach, Islazul Dos Mares Hotel offers simple accommodation to guests looking for a budget beach break. The rooms are simply furnished, and have a bit of a country feel to them. Each features en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, satellite TV and telephone. Islazul Dos Mares is a relatively basic property, and there are not many public facilities available. An internet connection is available in the reception area, and there is on-site parking for motorists. Reception staff can assist with tours, transfers and car rental. The on-site restaurant serves a breakfast buffet, and mostly seafood specialties the rest of the day. The lobby bar is open 24 hours. The main attraction is surely the sandy beach that Varadero is famous for. It is mere steps away. Varadero Airport is about 17 miles to the south.
Whatever their issues with the hotel were, and there were many, no guests disputed that it was fantastically situated. They had come to Varadero for its incredible beach and were happy to find themselves just a minute or two away from it on foot.
While most guests didn't come straight out and say the hotel was good value, many did say that the room rate they received was low compared to other area hotels. Some guests could then simply ignore the shortcomings and spend as much time away from the hotel itself as possible.
For all the criticisms lobbed at the hotel, it did seem to succeed were most fail by selecting a mattress with very broad appeal. There were many comments saying how comfortable the beds were, and no real complaints.
On the whole, guests were not at all happy with their rooms. In the first place they were described as suitable only for a Spartan warrior. In the second place, even the limited furniture and fixtures that were there were in a shocking state of repair.
It was hard to find a good word written about the cleanliness of either the rooms or the public areas of the hotel. Some guests even went so far as to say that their room was “filthy”, with even the walls somehow grubby and in need of a clean.
Guests mentioned that the bar downstairs stays open around the clock, and can often get very loud. Also, the Beatles Experience nightclub is a short walk away. The result was that the rooms were incredibly loud at night, leading to some guests being unable to sleep.
