Many of those who stayed considered the hotel to be in a rather bad condition, with the decor described as dated or poorly redone, although the renovation here has been mentioned by guests as ongoing. Furthermore, some people noted that they found mould on the walls, and said the gardens and house looked unkempt.
According to guests, many of the rooms at Hill View are at the top of the house and can only be reached via four flights of stairs — which was not appreciated by the less mobile.Furthermore, reviews occasionally painted the rooms and bathrooms as being rather small, with little room to move around.
Guests were sometimes unhappy to find an empty reception desk, the 24-hour service apparently meant the doorbell was ringing at all hours — in addition to occasional noise disturbance from other guests and the street— and the service here was not always thought to be particularly professional. Moreover, guests were occasionally very displeased with the minimal portions of English breakfast, which came without bacon.
