Known as much for its restaurant as its accommodation, Gleeson’s Townhouse offers both modern and classical accommodation for those looking to tour the midlands and the west of Ireland. Rooms have either classical or modern décor, and feature en-suite bathrooms, flat screen TV’s, tea/coffee stations, hairdryers and telephones. There is off-street parking, and Wi-Fi is free and available throughout the property. A full cooked breakfast is available every morning. Other meals can be enjoyed in the well regarded on-site restaurant, which specialises in hearty Irish food and hospitality. The in-house Lamb Stew is a particular favourite. Gleeson’s does its utmost to source local and organic ingredients wherever possible. Gleeson’s is right at the centre of Roscommon, and its dramatic castle is barely 600 yards away. Further afield, Lough Ree, with its fishing and other watersports, can be accessed about 10 miles from the property.
While not everyone had the stew, those who did certainly enjoyed it. But the restaurant served more than just stew, and recent guests had almost only good things to say about the taste and quality of the food served.
Quite a few guests mentioned being astonished how quiet their rooms were at night. Gleesson's is in the centre of Roscommon and they were clearly expecting some street noise, at the very least. But the rooms were described a being perfectly quiet. Not even noise from other rooms or the hallways seemed to be heard.
Again and again guests mentioned how welcoming and attentive the staff were. Guests were especially touched by the tea and scones served on arrival. They found it a warm and kind gesture.
The townhouse seems to be in a slow period of renovation, but before this project is complete it there are some rooms that remain a bit dated and frayed at the edges. Guests assigned one of these rooms were a little unhappy, and certainly hoped that they would soon be updated.
A fair number of guests mentioned that during busy times the breakfast staff seemed a bit overwhelmed, causing some disruption and lack of service as things started to snowball. They speculated that there may not have been enough staff available for the number of guests.
While ideal room temperature is notoriously a matter of personal taste, several guests travelling in the winter months mentioned that their rooms were exceptionally cold. There was unfortunately no way to adjust the temperature in-room.
