The hosts couldn't be more friendly and helpful to visiting strangers. The property is less than inspiring from the outside but, inside it is full of quality family furniture and decorative features. Understandably, the owners are brimming with pride.
The owners come to the fore to help you enjoy your stay to its best advantage. You can, for instance, save money by buying a LisboaCard. This gives unlimited metro, bus and tram travel plus discounted access to museums etc. The accommodation is pretty central, so there's easy access to transport and to attractions.
It won't appeal to everyone as you become almost part of the family … with wine and snacks in the evening! The kitchen is good and well equipped and the room itself and shared areas are spacious and inviting.
Noise can be a factor as this place was built in the 19th century, long before soundproofing was considered to be essential.
This isn't the easiest place to find and even when you do, it covers five floors and - guess what - there's no lift! Wi-Fi only seems to work in the 1st floor reception area, not throughout the building. The area has some shady characters wandering round and there's an accumulation of yucky rubbish outside.
Look on it as a hostel, rather than a B&B and you'll be thrilled. The free breakfast isn't up to much and well worth missing - but it is free! You certainly need to adapt to enjoy your stay but, if you can do this, it's great and very cheap.
