Chalmers Street provides cost effective, campus accommodation, close to Princes Street in Edinburgh. Modern rooms at Chalmers Street are en-suite, although some have shared bathrooms. Accommodation includes a bedroom with desk and comfortable bed. There is also a lounge and free Wi-Fi. The kitchen includes: refrigerator, freezer, oven/microwave and vacuum cleaner. All utility bills are included in the cost. Free cleaning of communal areas takes place fortnightly, there are designated areas for bicycle storage and the common room is an area in which to socialise with other guests. There is also a communal laundry facility. There are numerous bars and restaurants in the vicinity. These include Bruno’s, Nice One and Nanyang. Self-catering supplies may be purchased at supermarkets: Sainsbury’s, Tollcross and Scotmid. Many accommodation units in this Marchmont area, have 'Meadows' views. Higher floors overlook the Pentland Hills. Waverley Railway Station is a 10-minute walk away.
This is campus accommodation, so it is fairly frill free. The basics are all here though and good. It's up to you to keep your own area clean. Communal spaces are cleaned once a fortnight. It certainly is a welcome alternative to the very expensive hotels in the city and of course, you have more independence and flexibility … because you aren't tied to expensive hotel meals and serving times.
If you are here for the Festival, most of the venues are within walking distance - so no costly taxis or hanging around waiting for public transport. The area itself is very pleasant with The Meadows offering acres of pleasant outdoor greenery.
You can't really fault the members of staff. Well used to dealing with the demands of students, they are quick to respond to your query or problem.
Furniture is a bit grubby and could do with a good clean. TV programmes are mostly rubbish, but there's no TV here … and you really miss it!
Large single beds are optimistically passed off as doubles. Also … Spring has come early … in the form of the ones that stick through the bed.
The cost doesn't compare favourably with that of other campus accommodation. Lots of things missing: no TV, no parking and not even any soap/toiletries. No frills? … dead right! There's a gravel path (*Who dreamed that one up?) which is very noisy late at night and the location is not well identified and is difficult to find.
