The Old Grammar School is Market Harborough's most iconic building - a place that has become the emblem of this small Leicestershire town. It stands on the High Street directly next door to St Dionysius Church and a stone's throw from the local government buildings that house the town's museum. The school was founded in 1614 and is exceptionally unusual in standing on a series of huge oak beams that leave about 70% of the ground floor space out in the open. It is thought that this area was used as a butter market - which must have been distracting for the children in the school, but today is mostly used by local charities raising money at the weekends with book and bric-a-brac sales. The building has biblical sayings painted around the woodwork and a date of 1614 is clearly painted on the outside. If you take photos of only one building in the town, it's almost certain that it will be this one.
