As Switzerland's first jailhouse hotel, Barabas Lucerne was built in 1862 and was used a Lucerne's central prison. The property is located in the Old Town within walking distance of plenty bars and restaurants.
Non-smoking accommodation includes private bathrooms with showers and complimentary toiletries. Guests can request hair dryers if they require one.
The Barabas Lucerne features a 24-hour reception and multi-lingual staff, a cosy inner courtyard, and guests can access the “prison” library. The common area is home to a screen which shows big sporting events as well as a foosball table, pool table and dartboard.
There is a continental breakfast available daily in the restaurant for a small fee. The onsite Japanese restaurant, Izakaya Nozomi, serves a variety of dishes including bento boxes.
The property is less than an hour from Zurich International Airport and attractions such as Lake Lucerne and Mount Pilatus can be reached in 40 minutes by car.
Many guests enjoyed their stay here because there are still the original jail house doors and there are bars on the windows. It adds to the charm of this place and the fact that it 'actually' was a prison. The rooms are small and comfortable and many guests expected that because of its history.
It is very clean.
There are numerous reports of this property and how clean the rooms are. Guests mention the walls are all white and the floors are spotless. Common areas are clean as well and you can tell that the owners and staff really take pride in their hotel business.
Affordable and funky.
Guests mention that this is by no means a luxury hotel, but if you know that going in, you'll enjoy your stay. It is a great price for what you receive and it also has a jail theme that adds to the fun of your stay.
Some guests found a stay here too noisy for their liking. This is mainly due to the Jailhouse Lucerne Club on the premises. Some guests mention that if the rooms were properly soundproofed it might improve the noise factor a little bit.
No lift available.
A few guests mention that the property does not have a lift, making it inconvenient for people who don't handle steep stairs too well.
No Wi-Fi in rooms.
Guests have been disappointed because there isn't any Wi-Fi Internet connection in the rooms. There is only a connection in the corridors so they felt silly standing around trying to connect to friends and family back home.
