Although there have been Jewish residents in Thessaloniki since the 2nd century BC the city became only known as the "Mother of Israel" after many Spanish Jews emigrated to Thessaloniki following the expulsion by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella from their own country in the late 15th century. Under the Ottoman rule a thriving community developed and the new arrivals integrated themselves by bringing their skills in of printing, science and, then, modern weaponry into the country. In 1941, when Thessaloniki fell into the hands of the Nazi's, the Jewish population of the city had reached more than 49.000 of which more than 96 % did not survive the dead camps. The museum aims to honour the achievements of its once lively and enriching Jewish community and wants to portray the daily life of the Jews in its city. There are photo galleries , exhibits of items from the daily life such as clothing, some stones from the great Jewish Necropolis and an exhibition about the Holocaust. Opening hours: Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from 11:00am to 2:00pm Wednesday and Thursday from 11:00am to 2:00pm and from 5:00pm to 8:00pm Closed on Mondays and Saturdays Admission is free
