8 Boutique by the Sea is a small guest house in a quite residential neighbourhood a short walk from the seaside. All the modern conveniences, such as flat screen TV’s, coffee/tea makers and work desks are included, as is air conditioning. Definitely a boon in the hot and humid climate. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, public areas and rooms alike. While it is a small place and cannot offer many amenities, the reception is open 24 hours and bicycle rentals are available if you’d like to explore the surrounding area. There is a great seafood option, the Sea Pool Lagoon Café, just across the road. Otherwise, there are numerous options in the area, including a local hawker centre for those wanting to try authentic Malaysian food. There is a lovely temple right across the road, and the famous Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram Buddhist Temple is less than three miles’ away.
The hotel is a short walk from the sea, and good beaches are also nearby. Many of the rooms have lovely sea views. Also, the Thai Pak Koong Temple is just across the street. Guests like the fact that, being a little way from the tourist area, it was much quieter than the main hotel strip.
The guest house was renovated in late 2015, so the rooms and décor have a fresh and modern feel, unlike many other smaller places were the décor is often very tired.
The guest house is close the well known Sea Pool Lagoon Café, which specialises in delicious Malaysian seafood dishes. There is also no shortage of other dining options in the area.
Some Muslim travellers have commented that there is no “qiblat” sign on the hotel premises, and adding one would be a simple way to enhance their experience during prayer times.
A surprisingly common complaint is that some of the advertised cable channels cannot be accessed, or they can on some days but not on others. Complaints to management do not seem to resolve this problem.
While the area is generally regarded as a positive feature, quite a few guests have mentioned that there are a number of stray dogs in the surrounding residential area. While there are no comments on them being aggressive, visitors who have a fear of dogs, or dislike seeing strays, should bear this in mind.
