Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany)

This impressive mountainside castle, previously used as a boarding school, military hospital and refugee centre, was renovated in 1997 into the current luxury hotel it is today. The drive onto the grounds is breathtaking while the lobby is magnificent upon entry.  Just a stroll to Bensberg, with views over Koln and a twenty-two minute ride into Cologne, you won't miss out on things to do here. The spa is popular among both locals and guests, so book in advance if you can. The on-site dining options are a must, especially Vendome, which ranks annually among top world restaurants. The breakfast selection is extensive and usually includes champagne.

Service will soar above and beyond your expectations here, with staff regularly going out of their way for your comfort. Most speak English, offer to do little extras, and ultimately make you feel like royalty.

Spacious and elegant, rooms include marble bathroom fixtures, free minibar treats, plush robes, thick towels and complimentary slippers.

While most rooms are remarkably silent, some have a tendency toward noise. Back-facing units may experience more rowdy event attendees, for example. Some also hear air traffic from the nearby airport all night.

Rooms in the main building seem to differ significantly from those in annex facilities, and some feel the size and atmosphere lacked in theirs. Get clarity at booking.
